Summary: | The proton magnetic resonance spectrum of 1,3-butadiene oriented in a nematic mesophase has been recorded and completely analyzed in terms of the proton-proton dipolar coupling constants and anisotropic chemical shifts. The NMR spectral parameters indicate that, in the liquid crystalline phase, the molecule is present in the
s-trans conformation, and that it is preferentially oriented with its longest axis parallel to the magnetic field. The internuclear proton distances derived from the NMR experiment are reported and compared with the corresponding structural data obtained from electron diffraction studies. |
