Dynamic disorder of (CH 3) 4N + in (CH 3) 4NX (X = Cl, Br and I) as studied by Raman spectroscopy

Vibrational assignments of the observed bands in the Raman spectra of tetramethyl ammonium (TMA) halides at 300 and 100 K are proposed. The splitting of the C 4N totally symmetric mode ν 3( A 1) in the iodide is discussed in terms of a disordered structure. The temperature induced variations of inte...

Description
Summary:Vibrational assignments of the observed bands in the Raman spectra of tetramethyl ammonium (TMA) halides at 300 and 100 K are proposed. The splitting of the C 4N totally symmetric mode ν 3( A 1) in the iodide is discussed in terms of a disordered structure. The temperature induced variations of intensities of the components suggest occupation of two different sites which correspond to two different orientations of the TMA ion: parallel and perpendicular. Their energy difference is deduced to be 0.43 kcal mol −1. The relative behaviour of the three halides are explained if the tumbling motion is governed by the free space available in the lattice (in the order I − > Cl − > Br −).
