Description
Summary:Oscillator strengths for the (2, 0)-(20, 0) bands of the B 3 Σ - u- X 3 Σ - g Schumann-Runge system in molecular oxygen have been determined from absolute measurements of the absorption coefficient over the wavelength range 1700–2000 Å. The measurements were made with an instrument resolution of 0·3 Å, under conditions of very small attenuation, so that the observed absorption was directly proportional to the absorption coefficient, regardless of the absorption profile. The oscillator strengths vary over three orders of magnitude, and reach a maximum at the (14, 0) vibrational transition. The magnitude and distribution of oscillator strength throughout the vibrational bands agree closely with the estimates of Jarmain, derived from a semiempirical potential.
