Coordination compounds of niobium(v) and tantalum(v) chloroalkoxides with ligands related to β-diketones

Solutions of niobium and tantalum pentachlorides in methanol react with salicylaldehyde, acetoacetanilide, benzoylacetanilide, 2-hydroxyacetophenone, 0-hydroxybenzophenone, and benzoylacetone, to produce crystalline compounds with the stoichiometry MCl 2(OCH 3) 2L. Molecular weight data indicate the...

Description
Summary:Solutions of niobium and tantalum pentachlorides in methanol react with salicylaldehyde, acetoacetanilide, benzoylacetanilide, 2-hydroxyacetophenone, 0-hydroxybenzophenone, and benzoylacetone, to produce crystalline compounds with the stoichiometry MCl 2(OCH 3) 2L. Molecular weight data indicate the compounds are monomeric. The complexes are diamagnetic. They react slowly with atmospheric moisture and decompose in methanol, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride solutions as indicated by conductance and spectral changes. Proton magnetic resonance, ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectra are reported. The NMR spectra suggest the complexes have a trans-dichloro structure.
