Description
Summary:The results of an exact analysis of plastic flow in the matrix of a plane-strain laminar composite at incipient fracture are used to establish theoretical relations between fracture-surface energy and composite mechanical properties. Estimates of fracture-surface energy for a copper-tungsten composite made with their aid are found to compare favourably with published experimental data. These relations also allow estimates to be made of the combinations of fibre and matrix mechanical properties and composite geometry which should lead to the achievement of high fracture toughness.
