Summary:The fatigue limit of notched bodies was analysed on the basis of the physical interpretation of the fatigue limit of smooth bodies. The relation between the stress concentration factor, K t, and the fatigue notch factor, K f, was derived theoretically, taking into account both the effect of the cyclic plasticity at the notch root and the influence of the notch stress field on the nucleated cracks.
