Description
Summary:The effect of short re-austenitizing cycles at various temperatures on the average austenite grain size, the formation of carbides, the austenite stabilization and the kinetics of the bainite transformation in three model steels was studied. Optical and electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the austenite grain size decreases with increasing number of austenitizing cycles but only up to a certain limit that depends on the material. In material with a high carbon content, cycling increases the amount of very fine carbides formed per unit volume. The first few cycles mechanically stabilize the retained austenite in all materials. Finally, it was found that the smaller the austenite grain size the smaller the fraction of bainite transformed in a given time. Possible explanations of these results are discussed.
