Description
Summary:The statistical theory of irreversible processes, developed by Prigogine and his coworkers, is applied to the study of the brownian motion of a quantum linear harmonic oscillator weakly coupled with a thermostat. It is shown that the evolution process is markoffian, and that, in the limit of long times, the expected equilibrium distribution is reached. We study the behaviour of the Wigner function, and we indicate a method to calculate the mean values of all the powers of the velocity and the displacement, in terms of the corresponding classical mean values.
