Polymerization of pyrrole by cationic photoinitiators

Summary: | A new method of polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of cationic photoinitiators such as iron-arene salts (ða-C
5H
5)Fe(ða-arene) under visible or ultraviolet irradiation has been described. The synthesized polypyrroles have low conductivity in the range of 10
−5 S cm
−1 and rather poor electrochemical properties. The polymerization reaction occurs only in the presence of oxygen and is inhibited by the addition of 1,10-phenanthroline. It is initiated by the Fe(
iii) species formed by the oxidation of Fe(
ii) fragments formed during the photolysis of the photoinitiators used. |
