Description
Summary:Electron microscopy has been used to study the nature of structure of acetyl cellulose (AC)-polyvinyl pyridine (PVP) graft copolymers in acetone as solvent. The original AC was found to aggregate and to form a heterogeneous network, but a different picture could be seen in the case of graft copolymers. The main type of structural elements at low polymer concentrations (0·001-0·01%) were globules of a size depending on the concentration of graft copolymer and on the content of PVP graft. An increase in these parameters led to association of the globules which gave rise to fibrillar threads, and these then formed the network. Such structuration is explained by a movement of the PVP branches in the solution due to lack of affinity of the acetone for the PVP, and also to reduction of the solubilization capacity of the solvent molecules for the main chain.
