Summary: | A study has been made of photochemical reactions of 4-azibenzosulpho acid and 4,4′-diazidostilbene-2,2′-disulpho acid with PVA in solid films. The formation of a three dimensional network takes place in the case of the diazide only. The results of spectrometric and kinetic investigations of photochemical reactions show that PVA crosslinking proceeds by a radical mechanism via recombination of emerging macroradicals. Photo decomposition of the azides is accompanied by the formation of nitrenes which, in the case of the monoazide, react with PVA molecules in both singlet and triplet states, but only in the latter state in the case of the diazide. The shorter life time of the singlet state of nitrene in the case of the diazide is attributable to lower symmetry of the ring, which is directly linked to the azide group. |
