Summary: | The variation in the small angle X-radiograms during uniaxial stretching of low pressure polyethylene containing spherulites has been interpreted in terms of two models of strips of spherulites, namely a helical model and a model of a strip of spherulites breaking down into blocks during shear deformation. Treatment of experimental data according to the two models leads to the same qualitative results. Better agreement between quantitative measurements made in the present work and better agreement with results of earlier work, are obtained by use of the helical model however. Treatment of the results according to the formula proposed earlier by Peterlin gives lower values of the angle of distortion of the crystallites. The nature of the deformation of polyethylene at low temperatures is discussed in relation to changes in the small angle X-radiograms. |
