Summary: | Low pressure polyethylene (LPPE) films were modified before and after orientational stretching by a graft copolymerization with acrylonitrile (AN). Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) has been used to study the structure present in the grafted films directly during isometric heating in the range 20–160°C. The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) formed discontinuous graft structures which prevents the relaxation of the orientated LPPE macromolecules. The high heat resistance of the grafts ensured the retention of orientation in the LPPE melt and the restoration of a fibrillar film structure during crystallization. The grafts do not hinder the production of the fibrillar structure during the grafted film stretching nor do they destroy it during the AN grafting onto orientated films. |
