Summary: | This review deals with the mechanisms of polymerization of monomers containing oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur. A common feature of the monomers discussed is that onium active centres are involved in the reaction mechanism. The problems of the mechanism of chain propagation, the stability of the counter ions and the relative reactivity of free ions and ion pairs are discussed. Analysis of experimental evidence concerning the polymerization of cyclic acetals indicates vigorous decomposition of the counter ions in these processes. The consequences of a specific mechanism of formation of the active centres in acetal systems are examined. |
