Summary: | A study was made of radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of a cobalt complex of hematoprophyrin IX tetramethyl ester at 60°. Catalytic chain transfer to the monomer was observed under experimental conditions, which was, however, weaker by about an order of magnitude than in the case of polymerization of methyl methacrylate and complicated by secondary processes. Based on results of IR spectroscopy concerning the structure of oligomer end groups obtained in the presence of a catalyst it was concluded that with catalytic chain transfer, the same way as in the case of methyl methacrylate the hydrogen atom is transferred from the radical to the monomer molecule. A study of absorption bands of benzene rings of styrene oligomers showed the existence of electron-vibratory interactions between rings and enabled a degree of polymerization of the vibratory segment of 10 to be established. |
