Summary: | The molecular mechanism of shrinkage has been determined for amorphous oriented PETP by IR analysis. It was found with PETP as an example that shrinkage phenomena in an amorphous flexible polymer obey a rotational-isomeric mechanism involving a redistribution and change in the relative amounts of various conformers. An analysis of the shrinkage kinetics shows that this process is due to cooperative conformational regrouping in an intermolecular force field. |
