The hydration of polyethylene oxide and polyacrylamide in solution

The hydration of PEO and PAM molecules has been studied. It was shown that a single repeating unit of PEO binds ca. 2 molecules of water at 20° and a PAM unit ca. 4 molecules. Raising the temperature to 90° fractures the hydration shell of PEO whilst that of PAM is more stable. The temperature depen...

Description
Summary:The hydration of PEO and PAM molecules has been studied. It was shown that a single repeating unit of PEO binds ca. 2 molecules of water at 20° and a PAM unit ca. 4 molecules. Raising the temperature to 90° fractures the hydration shell of PEO whilst that of PAM is more stable. The temperature dependences of the hydration numbers agree with those of the molecular parameters, characterizing the affinity of the polymer for a solvent.
