Description
Summary:The formation of donor-acceptor complexes between styrene and p-benzoquinone has been investigated. The complexing constant amounting to 0·11 1./mole has been determined. It has been established that the complex of p-benzoquinone and styrene exerts a positive influence on the rate of polymerization of styrene and copolymerization of styrene with p-benzoquinone and shortens their induction period. From the results obtained and the kinetics of the process and also the structure in the end products, the authors propose a mechanism for the copolymerization of styrene and p-benzoquinone. It is shown that the complexes of p-benzoquinone and styrene regulate the composition and structure of the copolymers obtained. A link between the concentration of this complex, the MD and M of the products formed has been established which is explained by the participation of the complex in the act of chain transfer.
