Description
Summary:The effect of polymer molecular weight and of reaction conditions of the formation of paired polymers from poly(trichlorobutadiene) and polystyrene by the Friedel-Crafts reaction has been followed. Under conditions selected so as to promote the intramolecular reaction (molecular weight of poly(trichlorobutadiene) 15 × 10 4−2 × 10 5, c 0 ⋍ 2%, [ AlCl 3] = 0·3−0·6 mole , 10–20°C), the reaction between the two polymer species is confined mostly to the region occupied by one pair of macromolecular coils and the resulting paired polymer has an ordered structure, low glass-transition temperature T g, and high density. On the other hand, under conditions of prevailing intermolecular mechanism (poly(trichlorobutadiene) of higher molar mass, increased c o and [AlCl 3] the reaction involves many polymer coils and the product has a statistical structure, higher T g, and low density.
