Summary:The copolymerization of p-benzoquinone with sulphur dioxide in various donor solvents was studied. The determining role of the donors, particularly of water, in the studied process was shown. The molecular mass distribution of the copolymers prepared in various solvents was studied by gel permeation chromatography ( M w = 780; M n = 640; M w/ M n = 1·17 ); it was found that the molecular-mass characteristics change very little. The structure of the obtained copolymers was studied by physico-chemical methods, and they were shown to be composed of hydroquinone and sulphone units.
