Summary: | The synthesis of a polymer in solution, where the reaction proceeds both in the solution phase and in the precipitate, has been studied by computer simulation. By varying the conditions of two-phase synthesis one can influence the width of the polymer molecular weight distribution. A narrow-distribution product is obtained when the polymer growing in the solution phase precipitates as a separate phase as soon as its molar mass exceeds a certain limit, provided the reaction cannot proceed in the precipitate. If however the reaction continues also in the separated phase, the distribution width increases with increasing reaction rate. |
