Summary: | The terminal velocity of arbitrarily shaped sand particles was experimentally studied in the intermediate (or transition) Reynolds number region (2 < Re < 500). The equation relating terminal velocity and drag coefficients of spheres has been modified to correct for the deviation from roundness by including a shape-modified size term using the morphological descriptor for radial variance called not-roundness. The advantage of this correlation is that all experimental data for non-spherical particles can be correlated by a single drag coefficient curve for spheres. |
