Description
Summary:K β K α X-ray intensity ratios of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, Ru, Rh and Pd transition metals in equiatomic aluminides have been measured following excitation by 59.54 keV γ-rays from a 200mCi 241Am point-source. In the case of 3 d metal aluminides we find significant deviation in the K β K α ratio from the pure metal value. The maximum deviation observed in the case of cobalt can be accounted by the transfer of 2.48 ± 0.19 electrons both from the (4 s, 4 p) states of the transition metal as well as (3 s, 3 p) states of aluminium to the 3 d state of cobalt. For Fe, Ni and Cu the charge transfer amounts to 1.58 ± 0.20, 0.79 ± 0.21 and 1.08 ± 0.33 respectively. For the 4 d metal aluminides we find an increase in the K β K α ratio by about 4% for Mo and Ru whereas for Rh and Pd almost no difference from the pure metal value is observed. Fresh calculations are needed for explaining the observed increase in the K β K α ratios of Mo and Ru.
