Description
Summary:The measured, normalized derivative amplitudes of Auger spectra from the surface of binary solid-solutions of copper and nickel are proportional to the average volume concentration of the alloys. It is observed that copper is preferentially removed by Ar ion bombardment within layers < 8 Å from the surface whereas the composition of the inner layers remains unaffected by bombardment. The evidence from the Auger spectra, within the given limits of sensitivity, indicates no significant excess concentration of either component of the alloys at the vacuum interface. This interpretation agrees with the characterization of the alloys as random solid solutions, as indicated by neutron scattering measurements of short range order and soft X-ray emission spectra of apparent electronic density of states in the Cu-Ni system.
