Description
Summary:A theoretical study of the adsorption and dissociation of diatomic molecules, A 2 and AB, on a solid surface and of the bulk diffusion of the atomic species is presented in this paper. Rate equations for these processes are solved and limiting forms for the surface concentrations of the species are presented. The electron beam used to stimulate the atoms in Auger studies of surfaces can be expected to induce dissociation and diffusion. The contribution of the diffused atoms to Auger intensity is calculated, and the intensity is found to approach its saturation value as 1/√ t. Qualitative comparisons of the calculated Auger intensities with experimental data are given.
