The silicon (110) surface: Possible structural models

Geometrical models of both the initial “16 × 2” and Ni-induced (2 × 1), (5 × 1) and (4 × 5) phases on the silicon (110) face are proposed. The adatom-dimer is used to explain the atomic structure of the “16 × 2” and (4 × 5)-Ni phases. The model for the (5 × 1) superstructure is based on the concept...

Description
Summary:Geometrical models of both the initial “16 × 2” and Ni-induced (2 × 1), (5 × 1) and (4 × 5) phases on the silicon (110) face are proposed. The adatom-dimer is used to explain the atomic structure of the “16 × 2” and (4 × 5)-Ni phases. The model for the (5 × 1) superstructure is based on the concept of domain walls (formed by dangling bonds) and dimers. A possible mechanism of the reconstruction of the initial Si(110) face into impurity (nickel-induced) phases is proposed.
