Description
Summary:We report excitation-functions for excited alkali atoms from NaCl, KCl and LiF surfaces irradiated with ultraviolet light in the range 15 to 70 eV, an energy range including several alkali core levels. The excitation function of the excited Li yield is shown to be similar to the total electron yield obtained simultaneously. The results are consistent with desorption initiated by a localized two-hole valence excitation following the decay of the core excitation. The excited potassium yield from KCl is seen to decrease with temperature, suggesting a dependence on surface conditions such as the presence of excess metal.
