Summary: | A clean [111]-oriented rhodium field emitter and epitaxially grown silver- and gold overlayers on this Rh emitter were imaged with field-ion (FI) and field-electron (FE) emission techniques. Transitions from a threefold symmetry of FE patterns of the clean Rh surface to a sixfold symmetry of corresponding patterns of silver- and gold-covered tips were observed. Any changes in the local geometry of these surfaces can be excluded during the overlayer deposition as checked by simultaneous field ion imaging. The role of unsaturated electronic surface states (ESS) of d-type in the observed phenomenon is discussed. |
