Structural evaluation of Langmuir-Blodgett films of amphiphilic phthalocyanines using infrared spectroscopy

Molecular assemblies within Langmuir-Blodgett films of 1,4-bis(carboxypropyl)-8,11,15,18,22,25-hexa-decylphthalocyanine ( 1) and copper 1,4-bis(5-hydroxypentyloxy)-8,11,15,18,22,25-hexa-isopentyloxyphthalocyaninate ( 1) have been deposited on silicon and gold substrates by Y-type transfer. Description
Summary:Molecular assemblies within Langmuir-Blodgett films of 1,4-bis(carboxypropyl)-8,11,15,18,22,25-hexa-decylphthalocyanine ( 1) and copper 1,4-bis(5-hydroxypentyloxy)-8,11,15,18,22,25-hexa-isopentyloxyphthalocyaninate ( 1) have been deposited on silicon and gold substrates by Y-type transfer. Molecular assemblies within these films have been examined using a combination of transmission and reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). Spectra of compound 1 exhibit polarisation effects consistent with a high degree of molecular organisation in the direction perpendicular to the substrate surface and within the plane of the film. The spectra of compound 2 exhibit little evidence of molecular organization either in the plane of the film or across the film.
