Description
Summary:In this study molybdenum disulphide films, about 0.5 micrometer thick, were rf sputter deposited on mild steel at ambient temperature and at different substrate bias. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis were used to investigate and characterize the coatings. Static friction tests were also employed. The coatings were found to contain various amounts of isolated and clustered growths, surrounded by areas having a very smooth MoS 2 coating. The outgrowths were found to be concentrated around surface defects such as impurities and scratches, but they could also be stimulated by electron bombardment. They showed different structures such as cauliflower-like and worm-like structures, sometimes with a double layer structure. The static friction coefficient was found to be affected by the substrate bias, giving a minimum around - 100 V bias.
