Summary: | Catalytic membranes are attracting an increasing interest today, since they offer the possibility to couple catalytic activity on either side of the membrane with a selective permeability through the membrane. This may lead to an increase in efficiency and selectivity of the overall catalytic process. We have constructed an experimental system for investigation of such reactions. Two reaction cells, operating in the pressure range 1–1000 mbar are separated by a thin membrane. The gas composition and reaction products in each cell are monitored by mass spectrometry with spatially resolved quartz capillary sampling close to the membrane surface. We have studied the hydrogen-oxygen water forming reaction over a 20 μm thin Pd foil. The water forming reaction affects the hydrogen permeation rate through the membrane. It is also demonstrated that adsorbed CO on either side of the membrane will hinder hydrogen permeation. |
