Description
Summary:The structure of silicon carbide abrasive papers is studied by the microscopic examination of sections, and the information so obtained is used as a basis for a theoretical model of the abrasion of non-work hardening metals. The model takes into account the shape of the contacting abrasive particles, their attitude in the abrasive paper, and their deterioration with use. Equations are developed for the mean depth of the scratches produced and for the late of metal removal, both of which agree well with experiment. The factors which emerge as being of greatest importance are the fraction of contacting particles which cut a chip, the rate of change of this factor with use of the paper, and the form of the groove that is cut. The experiments and theory allow the relative importance of these factors to be assessed and permit some assessment of the optimum characteristics of practical abrasive papers.
