Description
Summary:In high-rate grinding applications, it is desirable to achieve uniform abrasive wear on the coated abrasive belt. This uniformity of wear permits efficient usage of available coated abrasive area and aids in producing good flatness tolerances on the workpieces. A system consisting of a specially designed data-taking station, a computer for processing data, and suitable software programming for formulating predicted abrasive wear is described. A technique of optimization of predicted abrasive wear distributions is also discussed and examples given. Abrasive belts have been tested under selected operating conditions and have produced abrasive wear distributions that correlate well with predictions. In addition, data on belt efficiency and workpiece flatness show that, under optimal conditions for uniform wear, belt efficiency is increased and surface flatness is improved.
