Summary: | Positive and negative hydrosols of silver bromide were formed by direct precipitation reaction in the presence of various ionic and nonionic polymers. The precipitation and flocculation processes were followed by measuring the change in turbidity. All macromolecules used have shown a pronounced protective action regardless of the charge of lyophobic and lyophilic components in solution. The effects were very similar to those observed with the preformed sols. The amount of macromolecular component necessary to exert the protective action increased with the concentration of silver bromide. At concentrations lower than those where protective action occurs, polyelectrolytes flocculate the nascent sols of silver bromide when they are of the opposite charge. Methylcellulose (a nonionic polymer) caused the flocculation of both positive and negative sols. |
