Summary: | In studies of polymer degradation, one relates physical and chemical property changes to ageing conditions under the effect, usually, of a single initiating process. In order to study the possible existence of associated effects in the combined photo and mechanical degradation of polypropylene, the behavior of oriented and non-oriented film samples irradiated under load have been investigated, as well as the effect of UV-irradiation on samples being mechanically tested. Results indicate the existence of photo-tribo-chemical effects which have been detected by stress relaxation and stress-strain measurements, and by carbonyl index determinations. |
