Summary: | Plants of the ozone-sensitive
Nicotiana tabacum cultivar Bel-W3 were exposed at 60 sites throughout the British Isles during the summer of 1977. The amount of leaf injury was recorded at weekly intervals and the increase in leaf injury during each week was calculated. At each site, the weekly increases in leaf injury were compared with the amount of sunshine and the direction of the wind in each week. The amount of injury was found to be related to the amount of sunshine and the size and proximity of possible urban sources of ozone upwind of the test plants. The results suggest that, in the absence of stable anticyclonic conditions, local sources with a population of above 75,000 may be as important as larger, more distant, cities in producing ozone and leaf injury. |
