Summary:A new method for the synthesis of 3-alkoxybenzanthrones is reported. The appropriate phase transfer catalysis conditions (a type of two-phase system, solvent, solid phase, catalyst) were selected. Three 3-alkoxybenzanthrones were synthesized in high yields and purity under these conditions. Their absorption and fluorescent spectra were determined and the energy of the first excited state calculated. The utility of the dyes for the mass-colouration of polystyrene was also demonstrated.
