α-Amylase and glucoamylase immobilized on chitin and ceramic supports

The enzymes, α-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1) and glucoamylase (EC 3.2.1.3), are used in starch liquefaction and saccharification for the production of glucose. A significant percentage of the costs involved in industrial ethanol production from starch is a result of the use of soluble enzymes. If these enzym...

Description
Summary:The enzymes, α-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1) and glucoamylase (EC 3.2.1.3), are used in starch liquefaction and saccharification for the production of glucose. A significant percentage of the costs involved in industrial ethanol production from starch is a result of the use of soluble enzymes. If these enzymes were immobilized on solid supports reutilization might be possible, thus reducing costs. This work compares the properties of α-amylase and glucoamylase, immobilized on two different kinds of supports: chitin and ceramic. A comparison was made in order to evaluate which support gave the highest levels of enzymatic activity and stability.
