Description
Summary:Electron beam irradiation is a practical and economical method to disinfect liquid municipal sludges at high thruput rates. Demonstration facilities have been built in Boston and Miami with treatment capacities of 170,000 gallons per day (650 cubic meters per day) for a minimum dose of 400 kilorads. The electron treatment process is described in some detail. Capital and operating cost estimates are given for continuous sludge disinfection. Total costs for liquid sludge are $7.50 per 1000 gallons ($2.00 per cubic meter). Equivalent cost for residual sewage solids are $50.00 per metric ton. Economic comparisons are made between electron accelerators and gamma-ray sources for liquid and dewatered sludge. The posibilities of treating wastewater and drinking water with high-energy electrons are also reviewed.
