Description
Summary:Fucoxanthin dehydrates are common constitutents of anoxic marine sediments representing important intermediates in the early diagenesis of major phytoplankton pigments. We report here the full structure and synthesis of fucoxanthin 5′-dehydrate and fucoxanthinol 5′-dehydrate isolated from Buzzards Bay (Massachusetts) and Peru surface sediments. Our analyses demonstrate that only the 9′- cis acetylenic isomer of each dehydration product accumulates in sediments, a result consistent with a metabolic origin for these transformation products.
