Longitudinal caustic scale and boundaries of applicability of uniform Airy-asymptotics

The concept of longitudinal caustic scale l ‖ is introduced to consider limits of applicability of uniform Airy-asymptotics. The results are illustrated by two examples: a circular caustic and the caustic for cylindrical waves in a linear layer.
