Spectrophotometric lightness and chromaticity measurements on absorbing peat and brown coal surfaces: Part I — method and evaluation

A quick and accurate spectrophotometric method to determine the diffuse reflectance (=remission) of brown coals and peats using two colorimetric evaluation methods, namely the CIE colour charts of 1931 and 1976 (DIN 5033 and 6164), is described. In contrast to previous remission measurements made on...

Description
Summary:A quick and accurate spectrophotometric method to determine the diffuse reflectance (=remission) of brown coals and peats using two colorimetric evaluation methods, namely the CIE colour charts of 1931 and 1976 (DIN 5033 and 6164), is described. In contrast to previous remission measurements made on coals where finely milled coal is pressed into moulds, which is cumbersome and prone to errors, this method simply uses coal/peat slices cut perpendicular to their stratification. Detailed descriptions of sample preparation, instrumentation and measurement techniques are explained and illustrated with the use of plant source input material (leaves, bark, etc.) and coal and peat samples. Furthermore, examples from the literature are reviewed, where diffuse reflectance has been used on coals and peats to assess their rank, facies, paleostratigraphy and technological properties.
