Summary: | Draft and fuel consumption data were gathered for tillage and seeding implements used in barley production systems in interior Alaska. Implements tested were: tandem disk; hoe drill; one-way disk with seeder; packer; double-disk drill; banding-disk drill. Draft data were compared with predictive values provided by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE D230.4) and data reported by researchers in other areas of Canada and the U.S.A.
Draft predictions based on the equations in ASAE D230.4 would in most cases give acceptable results for the Volkmar silt loam soils in interior Alaska. Draft was generally higher in stubble conditions than on bare ground. Soil moisture content was found to have the greatest effect on draft and fuel consumption. Speed was significant for several cases when variations in soil moisture were minimal. |
