Summary:The synthesis of a range of copper perovskites of general formula Y n La 2− n+ x Ba 4− x Cu 6O 14+ y (n =0, 1 ( for which 0⩽x⩽1) and n=2 (0⩽ x⩽2) is reported. These materials have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, dc resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements. Substitution of yttrium by lanthanum in YBCO results in only minor variations in physical properties; replacement of barium by lanthanum causes a more dramatic reduction of T c. Structural studies by low temperature neutron powder diffraction reveal a previously unreported distortion of the Cu-O chains in some of these materials.
