Exact solutions of a nonlinear boundary value problem: The vortices of the two-dimensional sinh-Poisson equation

Using an extension of the inverse scattering method, we have succeeded in solving a nonlinear boundary value problem, namely, the sinh-Poisson equation with a zero boundary condition on a square. The solutions are equilibrium states of vortices in fluids or plasmas.
