Mass discrimination of isotopic Xe + ions ejected from an r.f. quadrupole trap: Fourier analysis of the ion signal for selected time-of-flight measurements related to ion position in the trap

Description
Summary:The temporal position of an ion inside an r.f. quadrupole trap has been determined by selected time-of-flight (TOF) measurements after ejection. Fourier analysis of the TOF ion signal for different positions of the ion in the trap during confinement gives the secular frequency of the motion of the ion. When a small number of ions of various m/Z values are simultaneously confined, they can be identified from the secular frequency of their motion. The experimental set-up used allows one to see the superimposition of the temporal evolution of different confined isofopic Xe +ions. Fourier transform analysis of the TOF ion signal gives the isotopic composition.
