Summary:Using results of electron and photon stimulated desorption for physisorbed rare gases and molecular hydrogen on Ru(0 0 1), the importance of vertical and lateral charge transfer processes between the adsorbate and the substrate, and between adparticles, respectively, is illustrated. It is shown that commonly DIET of physisorbates cannot be described within the framework of only one mechanism, and that particularly for stimulated desorption of molecules the asymptotic nature of their electronic excitations as well as the energetic correlation with the occupied and unoccupied density of states of the substrate are important.
