Summary: | The effects of the mass transfer resistances outside and inside the carrier on the overall reaction rate and on the yield of the product in consecutive reactions catalyzed by immobilized multi-enzymes were studied using analytical solutions of one-dimensional diffusion equations with the assumption that the rate equations were linear. The study was mainly confined to the initial flux and the yield of the final product. A limitation in the total number, per unit volume of carrier, of reactive groups available for coupling enzyme molecules gave several equations for the optimum compositions of the immobilized enzymes. The external diffusion resistance through the liquid film surrounding the surface of the carrier was found to have only a slight effect on the optimum compositions of the immobilized enzymes. |
