Kinetics of catalytic oxidation of ethylene: Fixed-bed and fluidized-bed studies
Catalytic oxidation of ethylene was investigated with catalysts containing 5% Ag (Type A) and 12% Ag moderated with 0.002% Se and 0.3% Ba O 2 (Type B). Fixed-bed studies showed that selectivity is independent of inlet gas composition and total conversion and that its value is over 0.68 for temperatu...

Summary: | Catalytic oxidation of ethylene was investigated with catalysts containing 5% Ag (Type A) and 12% Ag moderated with 0.002% Se and 0.3% Ba O
2 (Type B). Fixed-bed studies showed that selectivity is independent of inlet gas composition and total conversion and that its value is over 0.68 for temperatures up to 260 °C (Type A) and up to 290 °C (Type B). The rates of conversion of ethylene to ethylene oxide and to CO
2 are both of half order with respect to ethylene concentration and first order with respect to oxygen concentration.
Fluidized-bed studies showed that both the velocity and concentration dependence of total fractional conversion of ethylene and the selectivity of the reaction agreed well with the theoretical predictions of a model in which the number of transfer units and the values of the bubble phase volume fraction were evaluated from the bubbling-bed model while plug flow and perfectly mixed flow were assumed in the bubble and dense phases respectively. |
