Summary:The Friedel-Crafts acylation of aromatic compounds (benzene, toluene, xylene) with carboxylic acids (CH 3(CH 2) n COOH, n = 0–14) was performed over cation-exchanged montmorillonites (H +, Al 3+, Ni 2+, Zr 4+, Ce 3+, Cu 2+, La 3+). Yields in ketones were found to be dependent upon the nature of the interlayer cation and on the acid chain length.
